About Ranch Style House Plans

Made popular during the housing boom of pre-depression United States, ranch style home are so named because of their origin in the western part of the country. Ranch style homes are characteristically built low to the ground and single story, with a low-pitched overhanging roof. Ranch style homes are also typically quite simple in appearance, free of elaborate adornments, and were among the first home plans that incorporated an attached garage.

Ranch style homes are often constructed in a rectangular shape, L-shape or U shape, and typically highlight the backyard with sliding glass or double French doors that open onto a patio or deck. The landscaping is usually reflectively simple, with an emphasis on wide expanses of lawn. The exterior of the home is typically brick or wood siding, and fixed picture windows are common along the front of the home.

Indoors, the atmosphere is open and airy, with few interior walls. Ranch style home plans made the combination living/dining/kitchen area popular. The separate formal living room is also a feature common to the ranch style home, easily arranged to fit any purpose or occasion.
